Wheel Alignments: How Often Do They Need to Be Done?

posted on
Wheel Alignment in Seekonk, MAAt New England Tire Car Care Centers in Attleboro MA, we sometimes have customers wonder how often a wheel alignment should be performed on their vehicle. Truth is, wheel alignments aren’t a routine-maintenance item that should be done at regular intervals.

On many vehicles, and especially with the right driving habits, a wheel alignment can stay in spec for a year or two at least. Here are some things to bear in mind when it comes to wheel alignments, however:
  • Periodically check your car’s front tires. Uneven wear patterns on the inside or outside edge of a tire are a sure sign of a front end alignment that is out of spec. Also remember that this sort of wear will invalidate a tire warranty, and is not covered.
  • Be aware of your vehicle’s handling and general road manners. A noticeable pull to one side, on a straight road with un-crowned pavement and properly inflated tires, means that your front end alignment needs adjustment. Sometimes a tire rotation may cure this problem, but if the pull is still there after the rotation, you should have the alignment checked.
  • A hard hit on railroad tracks, a curb or a pothole can be enough to jolt the front suspension components out of adjustment. If you notice a difference in your car’s handling and straight-line stability after an incident like that, chances are it’s time for a wheel alignment.
  • Older vehicles with many hard miles on them will begin to wear front end parts like ball joints and tie rod ends. On these vehicles, the extra play and slop in these parts may mean more trouble in maintaining proper alignment angles, and more frequent adjustments might be necessary.
  • When you’re buying a new set of tires, it just makes sense to have an alignment performed at the same time. You want those tires to start their life with the best alignment and most even wear patterns possible!
It’s also worth noting that some makes and models of vehicles are more prone to alignment drift due to their design and manufacturing. If you ask, some shops may shade the truth on this a little in an effort to get your car in the shop and up on the alignment rack…but not our service advisors at New England Tire Car Care Centers.
