Are Your Tires Ready for Winter?

posted on

Have you noticed your vehicle slipping and sliding on icy roads lately? Has it been a while since you checked on your tires? Let New England Tire Car Care Centers walk you through what it takes to make sure your tires are in optimal shape for the winter months.Winter Tires in MA & RI

Make Sure You Have the Correct Tires

Before you do anything else on this checklist, make sure you have the correct type of tire for the weather. These days, many people drive on all-season tires year-round because it is more convenient that swapping out your tires twice a year. However, even in a 4-wheel-drive vehicle, winter tires outperform all-season tires with their traction and handling. This is because they are made of a softer rubber compound than all-season tires, allowing them to remain grippy even in the coldest temperatures. If you ever drive on icy roads (like many New Englanders), the improved safety of winter tires could be worth the investment.

Check Your Tread Depth

Check your tread depth by inserting a penny head-down into the tread of your tires. If the top of Lincoln’s head is visible, your tires are bald. Driving on worn out tires during the winter months is extremely dangerous. Call New England Tire Car Care Centers today if it’s time to replace your old tires.

Check Your Tire Pressure

When the temperature drops suddenly, the air inside your tires will compress, causing your tire pressure to drop. To check your tire pressure, use a tire pressure gauge when your car is “cold” (hasn’t been driven for at least 3 hours). If your PSI is lower than what is recommended in your vehicle or on the sticker inside your driver’s side door, head to an air pump to correct the problem. Driving on deflated tires will negatively affect your gas mileage, tire wear, and safety, so don’t put off checking your tire pressure!
