Cooling System? Wait...It's Winter!

posted on

An automotive cooling system forces coolant (a distilled water/antifreeze mix) through water jackets around the engine block, dispersing heat pretty effectively. The hotCooling System Service in Warwick RI coolant then makes its way through the many coils and fins of the radiator; between the radiator, cooling fan and the wind blowing through the engine compartment while driving, it keeps the coolant at operating temperature.

The cooling system, then, consists of the water pump, hoses, radiator, thermostat, engine water jackets and heater core (located behind the dashboard on the passenger side).

Thing is…while coolant keeps your vehicle from overheating by raising the boiling point of water, it also lowers the freezing point and prevents freeze up in the winter (which could crack an engine block). More than that, though, coolant contains anticorrosion agents which prevent scale and lime from building up on internal passages in the radiator and heater core. Your heater core is essential to keeping your passenger compartment comfortable and providing enough heat to the cabin and radiator…and a clogged heater core can be a real headache to replace.

At New England Tire, we’re offering a Cooling System Service special for a limited time. For $59.95, you’ll receive:

  • One gallon of green antifreeze
  • Distilled water to fill system
  • Pressure test of system
  • Inspect hoses
  • Tighten connections
  • Drain and fill radiator

Please note that some vehicles manufacturers’ recommendations call for other antifreeze products; types other than green may result in an extra charge.

Manufacturer’s recommended service intervals for cooling system maintenance may vary, anywhere from every 35,000 to 70,000 or more miles. One thing’s for sure, though – it’s not something that you want to put off. If you’re not sure when your last cooling system maintenance was performed, we can easily check your coolant’s condition with an instrument called a hygrometer. This tests the specific gravity of the coolant and can detect any impurities that are circulating through the system.

Don’t think you’re in the clear just because it’s winter – your cooling system needs service year-round, regardless of the season. Make an appointment with us at New England Tire and take advantage of our $59.95 cooling system special!
